Oral hygiene & teeth cleaning, looked after with care.

If you’ve been searching for an oral hygienist near you in Durban North, you’re in the right place. We offer gentle, evidence-based hygiene appointments with Lillian Terblanche and Keshree Naicker: with combined 40+ years of clinical experience and a calm, unhurried approach that runs through everything we do.

Hygiene is where great dentistry starts

At The Dental Collective, oral hygiene sits at the heart of how we care for every patient. We believe healthy gums and a clean, confident smile begin long before any cosmetic or restorative work — they begin at your regular hygiene visit. Our oral hygienists have spent more than twenty years each helping patients across Durban North look after their teeth, and lead our hygiene programme with the same calm, evidence-based approach that runs through the whole practice.

Whether you’re due for a routine scale and polish, are looking to refresh your smile, or want professional teeth cleaning that’s gentler than what you may have experienced before, we’d love to welcome you to our rooms in La Lucia. Our patients come from across Durban North, uMhlanga, La Lucia, and the wider KZN coast.

Our hygiene rooms see a mix — long-standing patients in for their six-monthly visit, parents booking in after their child’s first paediatric appointment, professionals coming in before a smile makeover or a wedding, and new patients who haven’t seen a hygienist in years and want to start somewhere calm. Wherever you sit on that spectrum, we’ll meet you there. Our oral hygiene chairs are often the first chairs patients sit in at The Dental Collective, and it’s where the relationship with the rest of the team begins.

What is a scale and polish?

A scale and polish is the foundation of preventative dental care. During your appointment, your hygienist removes the build-up of plaque and tartar (also called calculus) that ordinary brushing and flossing can’t reach — particularly along the gumline and between teeth — and then polishes the tooth surfaces so plaque has less to cling to in the days that follow.

Most adults benefit from a scale and polish every six months, though your hygienist may recommend a shorter or longer interval depending on your gum health, your medical history, and how you respond to home care. A well-timed scale and polish is a straightforward way to protect against gum disease, fresh-breath issues, and the slow staining that builds up from coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco.

What to expect at your appointment

Your first hygiene visit at The Dental Collective takes around forty-five minutes to an hour. We’ve designed the experience to feel calm and unhurried, in line with the Slow Dentistry principles our practice is built around — sufficient appointment time, full sterilisation, informed consent, and proper isolation throughout.

When you arrive, your hygienist will start with a chat — your medical history, any concerns, anything that’s been bothering you, and what you’d like to walk out feeling. She’ll then carry out a gentle assessment of your gums and teeth, looking for early signs of gum disease, decay, or anything worth flagging to one of our dentists.

You’ll leave with a clean, smooth feel, a clear sense of your gum health, and a date in the diary for your next visit.

Whitening after your hygiene visit

A scale and polish does remove some surface staining — but it isn’t a whitening treatment. If you’d like to lift the underlying shade of your teeth, we offer in-practice and home whitening as a separate service. Your hygiene appointment is the right place to start the conversation, and a hygienist or your dentist can talk you through whether whitening is suitable for you.

A note on timing: if you’re considering veneers or any front-tooth cosmetic work, we wait fourteen days after whitening before doing colour-matched work, so the shade has time to settle.

Paediatric Oral Hygiene

Introducing children to oral hygiene visits early helps create positive, comfortable experiences around dental care from a young age.

Paediatric oral hygiene appointments are gentle, educational, and designed to feel non-intimidating — giving children a soft introduction to the dental environment before more complex treatment is ever needed. These visits help children become familiar with the sights, sounds, and routines of the practice in a calm and supportive way.

Early hygiene visits also allow us to monitor oral development, reinforce healthy brushing habits, and help prevent future dental problems as children grow.

Frequently asked questions about oral hygiene

For most adults, a scale and polish every six months is a sensible default — but it’s not a one-size-fits-all rule. If you have a history of gum disease, smoke, wear orthodontic appliances, or have implants and extensive restorative work, your hygienist may recommend a shorter three- to four-month interval. If your gums are stable and your home care is excellent, you may be advised to come in less often. The right answer for you comes out of your first assessment with Lillian.

Most patients describe a hygiene visit at The Dental Collective as comfortable rather than painful. EMS air-polishing uses a warm water and powder spray rather than the metal scraping people often remember from older-style cleanings, which is gentler on sensitive areas. If you have particularly sensitive teeth, exposed roots, or dental anxiety, please tell Lillian at the start of your appointment — she’ll adjust the approach, take more breaks, and walk you through each step. A topical anaesthetic gel is available where helpful.

A scale and polish is a clinical hygiene treatment — its job is to remove plaque, tartar, and surface stains so your teeth and gums stay healthy. It can lift everyday staining from coffee, tea or red wine, which often makes teeth look noticeably brighter on the day. Whitening, by contrast, lifts the underlying shade of your enamel using a peroxide-based gel. We offer Philips Zoom in-practice whitening as a separate appointment, generally done after a hygiene visit so we’re working on a clean surface.

A standard hygiene appointment takes around forty-five minutes to an hour. If it’s your first visit with us, allow a little extra time for paperwork and a more detailed assessment. Patients who haven’t seen a hygienist in a long time, or who have heavier tartar build-up, may be asked to come back for a second session so the cleaning can be done thoroughly rather than rushed, that’s the Slow Dentistry approach our practice runs on.

Most South African medical aid schemes include preventative dental care under the dentistry benefit, but the specifics vary plan-by-plan. Annual limits, co-payments, and which procedures are covered all depend on your scheme and option. Our reception team will run a code-by-code estimate before treatment and flag any out-of-pocket portion. We’d recommend checking your dental benefits with your scheme directly so there are no surprises — please ask reception when you book and we’ll talk you through what’s typically covered.

Yes — EMS air-polishing is particularly well-suited to patients with restorative or orthodontic work. The fine powder spray is gentler than traditional metal scaling, which means less risk of scratching porcelain or composite veneer surfaces, and it can clean carefully around implant abutments, brackets, wires, and aligner attachments where plaque tends to gather. If you have a specific concern about a recent piece of work, tell your hygienist at the start of the appointment so she can adapt her technique and powder choice.

Often, yes. Persistent bad breath — known clinically as halitosis — is frequently caused by bacterial build-up below the gumline, on the tongue, and between teeth that ordinary brushing can’t reach. A thorough scale and polish, combined with a tailored home-care plan, addresses the bacterial source rather than masking it. If bad breath continues after a hygiene visit and you’ve ruled out diet and medication causes, your hygienist will refer you back to one of our dentists.

Pregnancy is one of the times we most encourage patients to keep up with hygiene visits. Hormonal changes during pregnancy can leave gums more prone to inflammation and bleeding — a condition often called pregnancy gingivitis — and a gentle, well-timed scale and polish helps keep that under control. Please let us know you’re pregnant when you book, and tell Lillian at the start of your appointment so she can adapt your visit. We’re happy to coordinate with your doctor or midwife.

Bleeding gums are not something to ignore, but they’re also one of the most common reasons patients come in. In most cases, bleeding is an early sign of gingivitis — inflammation caused by plaque sitting along the gumline — and is reversible with a thorough scale and polish, a refreshed brushing-and-flossing routine, and a follow-up. If the bleeding persists, your hygienist will involve one of our specialist periodontists, Dr Bradley Bredekamp or Dr Bongi Mahlangu.

The Dental Collective is based at 4 Nollsworth Crescent, Nollsworth Park, La Lucia — central to Durban North, uMhlanga, La Lucia, and the wider KZN coast. No, you don’t need a referral to book a hygiene appointment with us. Many patients see Lillian regularly without ever needing complex dental work, and that’s exactly how preventative care should sit. If during your visit she or one of our dentists picks up something that needs attention, we’ll talk it through with you, give you a clear plan, and never push you into anything you’re not comfortable with.

Home care is where most of the work happens. We’ll give you a tailored plan, but the basics are: brush twice a day for two minutes with a soft or electric toothbrush, clean between your teeth daily with floss or interdental brushes, and use a fluoride toothpaste suited to your needs. Mouthwash can be a useful add-on but isn’t a substitute for brushing and flossing. Bring any products you’re using along — Lillian and Keshree are happy to give feedback.
